Cristiano Ronaldo statue in India sparks huge debate

A new statue of Cristiano Ronaldo has been unveiled in India, in the state of Goa on the southwestern coast of the country. While the idea behind the statue was to inspire young people, the work has mostly sparked debate among members of India’s football community.

Some black flags have been waved at the statue as a sign of protect, with critics arguing that local Indian footballing talents should have been honoured instead of the Manchester United superstar.

Local news agency IANS gathered the opinions of some of the locals and they explained why they are against the statue.

“I’m very disappointed to hear of the statue of Ronaldo being erected, as we should learn to take pride in our own icons like Samir Naik and Bruno Coutinho,” said one person.

Sixty years since Goa’s independence

The statue is also proving controversial because this December marks 60 years since Indian troops captured Goa from Portugal. There have been celebrations this month of the important date in the region’s history.

With the statue’s unveiling taking place right now, some view the erecting of a tribute to a Portuguese icon as an insult to those who fought for independence – even though there is a culture of supporting Portuguese teams, the Portugal national team and Portuguese sports stars in this state.

“To erect a statue of a Portuguese footballer this year is sacrilegious and we condemn this, as there are many freedom fighters in Goa who have been insulted,” another activist said, again according to IANS.

Cristiano Ronaldo has not yet made any public comments on or shown any recognition of this controversial statue.

This is also not the first Ronaldo statue to hit the headlines, with the one put on display in 2017 at Madeira Airport being mocked for its relative lack of resemblance to the footballer.
