KR Ramesh Kumar: 'When rape is inevitable, lie down and enjoy'; Karnataka Congress MLA KR Ramesh Kumar sparks controversy | Hubballi News

BELAGAVI: Former Karnataka assembly speaker and senior Congress MLA KR Ramesh Kumar on Friday apologized in the assembly for his controversial ‘enjoy rape’ comment.
“If it hurts the sentiments of women I have no problem in apologizing. I apologize from bottom of my heart,” Ramesh said.
After he apologized on the floor of the assembly, speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri said that “the MLA has apologized and let’s not drag it further.”
Ramesh stoked controversy in the assembly on Thursday by saying “when rape is inevitable, lie down and enjoy it.”
The insensitive remark came when MLAs began to demand time from speaker Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri to discuss the issue of crop loss. Soon, a video of the controversial statement went viral, much to the embarrassment of Congress.
When the debate on crop loss due to untimely rain was prolonged with more members seeking time to speak on the issue, an exasperated Kageri said his position was like someone who is compelled to enjoy an adverse situation when it’s forced on one.
“I have no objection to more members speaking about the subject, but my concern is that no other business can be conducted if we stick to one particular issue. My position is like a person who would enjoy something when it is inevitable,” said Kageri looking at Ramesh Kumar, who said, “There is a saying – when rape is inevitable, lie down and enjoy it.” Kageri chose not to expunge the remark from records.
When Kumar was assembly speaker, he had compared himself to a rape survivor when his name emerged in a controversial audio clip.
A day after the gang rape of a college student in Mysuru recently, home minister Araga Jnanendra had caused outrage with his statements by ‘joking’ about the incident. Accusing Congress of ‘politicising’ it, the minister had on August 26 said, “Rape has occurred there (Mysuru). But Congress is trying to rape the home minister here.”

Congress MLA Ramesh Kumar apologized on Twitter also for his statement on rape.
“I would like to express my sincere apologies to everyone for the indifferent and negligent comment I made in today’s assembly about “Rape!” My intention was not trivialise or make light of the heinous crime, but an off the cuff remark! I will choose my words carefully henceforth,” tweeted Ramesh.
