Lionel Messi claimed his seventh Ballon d’Or on Monday night as he beat Robert Lewandowski and Jorginho to the prestigious prize.

Cristiano Ronaldo finished in sixth, one place ahead of Mohamed Salah, and hit back at claims by a French journalist that his career goal was to finish with more Ballons d’Or than Messi.

Manchester United have confirmed Ralf Rangnick as their new interim manager.

But he will not be in the dugout for the Red Devils’ game against Arsenal on Thursday as he is yet to obtain a work permit, with Michael Carrick continuing as caretaker.
