This is how social media got together to help find a missing man who was depressed

On December 11, a Twitter handle @FindingTanmay appeared on the feed of many prominent Indian Twitter accounts. The account was made by friends and family of Tanmay Upadhyay, a 30-year-old man who went missing on December 11 after he left home for a walk. “Please help find Tanmay, He has been missing since Dec 11 night from Sec-34, NOIDA. @noidapolice is doing its bit,” read the tweet.

The user also tagged popular social media personalities to increase visibility and the particular message was retweeted by several people. Noida Police also sprung into action and tweeted about Tanmay and further alerted Delhi Police, UP Police and Gurugram Police.

Tanmay’s family was more stressed because the man was not well, ‘mentally ailing’ as the family wrote. “Tanmay is a soft-target for kidnappers & antisocial elements who are in abundance in UP,” read a tweet from the handle. “Tanmay was suffering from depression for the last 15 days and was on anti-anxiety medication,” his brother Himanshu Upadhyay told Hindustan Times. Reportedly, Tanmay was struggling to get a job for the last three years after he completed his master’s course in 3D animation.

Fortunately, after reading the tweets on social media, someone spotted him in Indrapuram and updated them. “@noidapolice @Uppolice We have found Tanmay @FindingTanmay Someone saw him on social media and called us from Indrapuram and updated us,” read the tweet made on the night of December 13.
