A man has been arrested after Brisbane Airport’s international terminal was evacuated when eyewitnesses reported seeing a man with a knife.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots or rubber bullets just after 8:30pm but police said there were no reported injuries.

“A man has been transported to a police station where he is to be interviewed,” police said.

“Specialist police remain at the airport with clearance searches of the international terminal ongoing.”

At about 9:00pm, Queensland police said they had made a declaration under the Public Safety and Preservation Act due an emergency situation.

Police said the incident had been contained but warned people to avoid the international airport.

Traveller Evan Wasuka, who had just arrived from the Solomon Islands, said security was “very firm” in moving people out of the building.

“All of a sudden, security started [moving] everybody out,” he said.

“They were very rushed, they were very firm in moving people out of the door. There were a lot of them. It all happened pretty fast.”

Witness Zoe Bickerstaffe said she saw an older man holding a small knife, and the incident looked like a “family feud”.

“[It was] terrifying for a while as everyone always assumes the worst,” she said.

The airport was evacuated and trains have been stopped.

“The Australian Federal Police is managing the security matter and we hope to get back to normal operations as soon as possible,” the airport said on Twitter.

More to come.
