Melbourne firefighters are battling a blaze spreading up an apartment complex believed to be covered in combustible cladding, on Spencer Street in the city’s CBD.

The fire started on the 16th floor of the building shortly before 5:00am, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) said in a statement.

One person has been taken to hospital suffering smoke inhalation, Ambulance Victoria said.

Fifteen fire trucks and 60 firefighters are battling the fire, with police and paramedics also at the scene.

“This fire is not under control but may well be a protracted incident, involving all fire crews currently in attendance,” the MFB said in a statement.

Flames were no longer visible outside the apartment complex at 6:55am, but the MFB said the fire was still not regarded as “under control”.

Spencer Street has been closed in both directions between Bourke Street and Lonsdale Street due to the fire.

A warning has been issued by emergency authorities for people nearby to shut their windows and doors to prevent smoke entering homes and businesses.

More to come.
