About 100 residents of the 30-storey Opal Tower apartment building at Sydney Olympic Park have been evacuated after reports of “cracking noises” from residents and passers-by.

An emergency operation is underway and police have closed the nearby train station and several roads.

The alarm was raised about 2:45pm.

Residents told police they heard cracking noises throughout the morning and emergency services are now testing the structural integrity of the building.

NSW Fire and Rescue said it had specialist equipment at the scene to monitor any movement and police have set up an exclusion zone.

Police were at the scene carrying heavy-duty equipment to knock down doors.

Residents from nearby properties have also been told to leave and are not being let back inside.

Opal Tower opened this year and contains 392 apartments. It is designed by Australian architecture firm Bates Smart.
