A large-scale search is underway for four men believed to be missing off the coast of Western Australia between Perth and Rottnest Island.

The men set off from Cockburn Sound on Wednesday night in a 5.5-metre boat to go fishing at the island.

They were due back on Thursday but never arrived.

Concerned family members contacted WA Police about 9:00pm last night to raise the alarm and a water search has been underway since.

Attempts to contact the men have been unsuccessful and police said there had been no sign of the group or their vessel on or around Rottnest Island.

No emergency calls have been received from any of the men.

A severe weather warning was issued for the Perth metropolitan area on Wednesday night, with strong winds forecast.

Bureau of Meteorology observations show wind gusts on Rottnest Island reached speeds of 54 kilometres per hour overnight.

Police helicopters and an Australian Maritime Safety Authority jet aircraft are expected to join the search effort this morning.

Water Police said they would like to hear from anyone who was boating at Rottnest Island yesterday and saw the white 5.5-metre vessel with four people on board.
