A man appears to have fallen to his death from a Melbourne apartment tower balcony while police were searching for suspects over allegedly stolen cars parked outside, officers say.
Police arrived at EQ Tower on A’Beckett Street after being called to the area about 6:25am to investigate reports of suspicious behaviour.
There they found two parked cars outside which officers suspected were stolen.
Police then entered the apartment and arrested three men as they exited the building’s lift.
The officers began to search the building for a fourth man and a woman they also wanted to interview about the cars.
During the search, one of the building’s residents told officers a man he did not know had entered his apartment and refused to leave.
The apartment was empty when police searched it and shortly afterwards they found a man’s body outside the building.
Police said they believed he may have fallen from the balcony, but the investigation was still ongoing.
The man is yet to be formally identified and police are still searching for a woman who they believe was part of the group.
Officers were seen going in and out of the tower in the hours after the death.
One of the residents said he came back to the building around 7:00am to find police around the building.
“There was a gentleman with handcuffs on, I’m not sure what the story is with that at all … he was in the lobby,” he said.
“He didn’t seem very happy and I guess I wouldn’t be either if I had handcuffs on.”
The EQ apartment tower is also where 19-year-old Melbourne woman Laa Chol was killed in July.
