Murphy Brown will not return for a second season

Murphy Brown is already ready to sign off.

The revival of the Candice Bergen sitcom will not return for a second season after completing its 13-episode run this winter. While an insider stresses that Murphy Brown was never meant to go beyond its initial order, the revival might have seen another day had its ratings been as strong as, say, Will & Grace. As it stands, Murphy Brown only ranks No. 43 in adults 18-49 among all broadcast TV programs.

Happy Together will also hit the bench but no decision has been made about whether the sitcom will earn another year.

Until then, CBS has more then enough to fill the void. The new comedy Fam starring Nina Dobrev and Tone Bell will take over Murphy’s time slot at 9:30 p.m. on Thursdays, while Man with a Plan will return in the Happy Together spot.

CBS also has more episodes of Life in Pieces in the can, to be aired at a later date.

Here’s the official longline on Fam: “It stars Nina Dobrev and Tone Bell in a comedy about a woman whose vision of a perfect life with her adoring fiancé and his wonderful parents is radically altered when her 16-year-old, out-of-control half-sister unexpectedly comes to live with her.”
